Wann und warum hast du bei BE-terna als Application Engineer angefangen, was hat dich anfangs zu dem Unternehmen hingezogen?

Ich bin am ersten April (kein Scherz!) 2017 zu BE-terna gekommen. Die Anfänge meiner Karrieregeschichte begannen ein paar Jahre zuvor, als ich als Student in einem anderen Unternehmen arbeitete, in dem BE-terna ihre CRM-Lösung implementiert hatte. Dort habe ich meine ersten Arbeits- und CRM-Erfahrungen gesammelt. Als sich eine Gelegenheit für einen Job bei BE-terna ergab, habe ich nicht lange überlegt. Die Entscheidung fiel mir auch deshalb leichter, weil ich einige Leute aus dem Team bereits kannte und ich ihr Wissen und ihre freundliche Einstellung schätzte. Das war es, was mich zu dem Unternehmen zog.

Wie sieht der Job eines Application Engineers bei BE-terna aus? Wie sieht dein typischer aus?

Ich beginne meinen Tag wie jeder andere auch. Zuerst ein Kaffee, dann prüfe und beantworte ich alle E-Mails. Da ich in der CRM-Abteilung arbeite, ist mein nächster Schritt, unser CRM-System zu öffnen, wo ich den Status aller meiner laufenden Aufgaben sehen kann. In diesem Sinne versuche ich, meine Arbeit über den Tag zu verteilen. Aufgrund der agilen Methodik von BE-terna habe ich auch eine tägliche Besprechung mit meinem Team, in der wir gemeinsam arbeiten. Natürlich gibt es Tage, an denen sich die Pläne ändern und man am Ende etwas ganz anderes macht - aber so ist unsere Arbeit nun einmal. Dann erwarte ich mit Spannung das Mittagessen mit meinen Kollegen 😊. Die Nachmittage sind normalerweise der Entwicklung und gelegentlichen Meetings gewidmet.

Was sind die Vor- und Nachteile der Tätigkeit eines Application Engineers?

Das Spannendste an der Entwicklung ist der Prozess der Umsetzung einer Idee in die Realität. Die endgültige Lösung muss nicht unbedingt ein kompliziertes Programm sein, sondern kann so einfach sein wie die Automatisierung einiger grundlegender, mühsamer, alltäglicher Aufgaben. Es ist immer interessant, das Endergebnis in Aktion zu sehen. Da wir in zunehmendem Maße von Technologie und Software abhängig sind, gehören Entwickler zu den gefragtesten Fachleuten im technischen Bereich, was nie eine schlechte Sache ist.
Manchmal funktioniert die Lösung, die man sich überlegt hat, nicht und man muss alles verwerfen und von vorn anfangen. Das kann ein wenig deprimierend sein, bis man erkennt, dass man trotz aller Probleme eine wertvolle Lektion gelernt hat. Auch knappe Fristen können Stress verursachen, sodass man in der Lage sein muss, unter Druck arbeiten zu können.

Was braucht man, um Application Engineer zu werden?

Kurz gesagt, man muss die Fähigkeit haben, Probleme zu lösen. Man muss sie in kleinere, überschaubare Probleme zerlegen und einen Prozess entwerfen, der zu einer Lösung führt. Wenn man nicht weiterweiß, sollte man sich nicht scheuen, ein Teammitglied um Hilfe zu bitten oder das Problem einfach mit ihm zu besprechen - du wirst überrascht sein, wie oft das schon geholfen hat.
Natürlich ist es am besten, wenn du über umfassende Erfahrungen mit der Funktionsweise von Computern, Netzwerken und Infrastrukturen verfügst, aber wenn du über solide Kenntnisse und ein Verständnis der grundlegenden Entwicklungskonzepte verfügst, kannst du mit ein wenig Mut und Engagement so gut wie alles lernen.

Wem empfiehlst du BE-terna als Arbeitgeber?

Ich empfehle BE-terna jedem, der sein Wissen erweitern und für ein dynamisches Unternehmen mit einigen der erfahrensten Leute in diesem Bereich arbeiten möchte. Die Arbeit in einem großen Unternehmen bietet nahezu unbegrenzte Karrieremöglichkeiten.

When and why did you join BE-terna as an Application Engineer, what initially drew you to the company?

I joined BE-terna on the first of April (no joke!) in 2017. The beginning of my career story began a few years prior to that, when I was working as a student at another company where BE-terna had implemented their CRM solution. That was where I gained my first work and CRM experience. When an opportunity for a job at BE-terna arose, I didn’t think twice. The decision was also easier for me, because I already knew some of the people from the team and I admired their knowledge and friendly attitude. That’s what drew me to the company.

What is the job of Application Engineer like at BE-terna? What is a typical day like for you?

I start my day like everyone else. First, coffee, then I check and reply to any unanswered emails. Because I work in the CRM department, my next step is to open our CRM system where I can see the status of all my ongoing tasks. With that in mind, I try to arrange my work throughout the day. Due to BE-terna’s agile methodology, I also have a daily meeting with my team where we discuss what we did the previous day, if there were any issues, and what we hope to accomplish by the end of the day. Of course, there are days when plans change and you end up doing something completely different - but that’s just how our work is. Then I eagerly await lunch with my colleagues 😊. Afternoons are usually dedicated to development and some occasional meetings.

What are the pros and cons of being an Application Engineer?

The most exciting thing about development is the process of turning an idea into reality. The end solution doesn’t have to be a complicated piece of software, it can be as simple as automating some basic, tedious, everyday tasks. Seeing the end result in action is always interesting. Due to the fact that we are increasingly dependent on technology and software, developers are among the most in-demand tech professionals, which is never a bad thing.

There are times when the solution you have imagined doesn’t work and you have to discard everything and start from scratch, which can be a little depressing until you realize that in spite of all the problems, you have still learned a valuable lesson. Tight deadlines can also cause some stress, so you need to be able to work under pressure.

What does it take to be an Application Engineer?

In a nutshell, you need to have the ability to solve problems. You need to break them down into smaller, manageable problems and design a process that leads to a solution. If you get stuck, don’t be afraid to ask one of your team members for help, or maybe just try discussing the problem with them – you will be surprised how often that can help.

Of course, it is best if you have broad experience of how computers, networks and infrastructures work, but if you have solid knowledge and understanding of core development concepts, you can learn just about anything with a little courage and dedication.
